Against all my better instincts I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel. Romantic tosh, yes. I couldn’t take Lorna Doone seriously, her virginity preserved against all the odds even on her wedding day. Yet I was fascinated by the discussion on the contingent nature of right and wrong and found the way the narrator was keen to dissemble his true nature strikingly modern. I have acquired another novel by Blackmore – The Maid of Sker – and will start reading it with more of an open mind this time.
